The laptop wasn't infected. It had too much security software.

I looked at three slow laptops this week. All were blamed on viruses. None of them were infected.

The worst one had an antivirus suite, a second malware scanner, a cleaner, and a "PC booster" running at the same time. They were fighting over startup, file scans, and notifications. After removing the extras, the laptop worked normally again.

For most Windows 10 and 11 home users, Microsoft Defender is enough. Keep Windows updated, install software from official sources, and use one real-time antivirus - not three.

"Cleaners" and "boosters" often add more startup tasks than they remove. Pirated installers are a separate risk: no antivirus can make an unknown executable trustworthy.

My rule is simple: fewer background tools, trusted downloads, occasional startup checks, and backups of files that matter.

Sometimes the fix is not installing another utility. It is uninstalling the ones the computer never needed.
